FISHER SHOTOKAN KARATE

EXTERNAL LINKS

By Charles Rhodes, P. Eng., Ph.D.

FISHER SHOTOKAN AND THE JKA:
The following external links are related to Fisher Shotokan karate. These external links are important because for political and competitive business reasons the present JKA does not recognize or acknowledge many former graduates of the original JKA Instructor Training Program.

During the period 1987 to 1997, following the death of M. Nakayama, several principals of the original JKA formed different independent karate organizations. There was extensive litigation amongst the parties as to who was entitled to use the JKA brand name. The present JKA is not the same organization as the original JKA. The original JKA welcomed foreign participation. The present JKA is nationalistic and does not recognize or acknowledge many graduates of the original JKA Instructor Training Program, their dan rankings or the dan rankings that they may have conferred on others.

Fees for retesting of black belts at each dan level are a substantial source of revenue for the present JKA.

The ego based disputes amongst former JKA principals precipitated so much world wide loss of respect that karate is still not recognized as an olympic sport.
